Sometimes when I watch Rachael Ray's show 30 Minute Meals, I think, "You've got to be kidding me." I mean, is she running out of ideas, or what? Really, who thinks of combining macaroni and cheese, beer, chopped up hot dogs, ketchup and mustard? That's a miss. A big disgusting miss.
But to be fair, she has some hits too. Like this recipe for Shepherd's Pie. I happened to catch it on her show last month and I've already made it 3 times. Add a side of green beans or corn and some bread and it's great family dinner. And even though I've made it 3 times, I still have yet to get it under 30 minutes!
Rachael Ray's Steakhouse Shepherd's Pie (original recipe is here, my version is below)
Gravy:
2 TBS butter
2 TBS flour
1 1/2 cups beef broth
2 TBS steak sauce
pepper
Meat
2 lbs ground sirloin
8 oz container mushrooms, sliced
1/2 onion, chopped
salt
Potatoes
3 large baking potatoes
3 TBS sour cream
3 TBS chives
4 slices bacon
Bring peeled, cut up potatoes to a boil in salted water.
Add sirloin, mushrooms, and onion to a skillet and salt to taste. Cook until meat is browned and liquid is gone.
In a small sauce pan over medium heat melt butter, whisk the flour into butter, cook 2 minutes then whisk beef broth into flour, add steak sauce and pepper, to taste. Thicken 6 to 7 minutes. Pour gravy over meat mixture, then pour into a baking dish.
Drain cooked potatoes and add sour cream and chives. Add a splash of milk so it will be easier to spread. Mash and then spread over the meat mixture. Top with nuked, crumbled bacon.

The show needs to state "30 Minute Meals ONLY when you have a staff to have everything ready for you." Recipe looks good! I may have to give it a try.
The thing about the 30 minute meals is that she has everything prepped for her! I can barely get things in the fridge when I get home from the grocery store...and buying veggies already separated and diced and cut is expensive! (convienent, but expensive!) I have to say, there are some hits, but most of the time I scratch my head and say "Huh?" HAHA! Her thanksgiving episode, which was 60 minutes, wasn't too bad...but again, most everything was prepared and ready to go. LOL, I could go on and on...I for one are a Giada and a Paula Deen freak! (I ♥ butter and Italian food!)
Sounds YUMMY!!! I have to try it!
Oh momma.. that looks good and fattening..yum!!
On a side note.. Rachel Ray irks me for some reason. I think its the voice.. I don't know.
The pie sounds good, I may try to make it in a vegetarian version. I liked Rachael Ray on her travel show - she was genuine then. Now she seems too - something. I am not her biggest fan.
Oh. My. Yumminess!!! I am so going to try that this weekend. It looks awesome :)
oh a cooking post...i can't stand racheal ray and her MOUTH, but my wife and daughters just love her...maybe i am jealous because i like to talk too but can't cook excpect for barlwo surprizes, like eggs over a clif
Hi Ali! I realize this has nothing to do with RR but read your comment this morning... You cried really once a week when you worked at sears?? That's not comforting! :) They asked me last night if I would consider staying and work around weddings... um we'll see there is alot of drama there?! As for Rachel Ray, I loved her on $40.00 a day, but now ??? I am not sure she's different
That looks good! Another recipe you will have to make for me!
Man, that looks good - I'm starving! LOL
Beer and macaroni and cheese, uh, yeah, I don't think so. YUCK!!
Yeah, I always wonder how she can make meals in 30 minutes but then I remembered SHE IS ON TV, anything can be done on TV. I printed out this recipe and plan on making it for the family!!
Oh, that sounds great. I'll have to put this in the rotation. I agree some of her ideas are awesome and some not so much.
I forgot to tell you I have a present for you at my place. Enjoy!!
Yum yum yum! Thanks for sharing that -- we'll have to try it!
I don't think there's much out there that is a decent meal AND takes 30 minutes or less, but if the food's good, it's worth it. Right?
ok I am hungry and that sounds Yummy! I am going to have to make it. I made a pot pie w/ corn bread on top that is one of our favs, it is a lazy kristen recipe that I made up.
I think this looks wonderful! I would agree with your comment about Rachel Ray... hit or miss! LOL!
Hi Ali,
Great recipe. I'm always looking for new, EASY ones.
Sorry I've been away for a bit. My PC was infected with a virus and I was (actually still am sick). Life feels out of control. I hope to be back bloggin and commenting (on your blog of course) on a regular basis next week.
Take care and bisous from Paris!
I have to admit, sometime Rachels' meals are a little too out there for me. I don't know how she does the "Thanksgiving in an hour" show! ha. Magic going on there!
Looks really good! I love shephards pie!
I agree - she definitely has some misses! But this one sounds fantastic. I love Shepherd's pie as it is, and this is such a fun twist. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
That looks yummy! I never watch Food Network. But suddenly hubby can't get enough of it. I think he has a crush on...OK, I forgot the name and asked him what it was, and he said "I don't know, the one with big boobs." I think that answers it!
I watch her and most of it looks alright, except my kids 'don't like anything touching' so that rules 90% out! lol.
